Tomoe Moriya
Professor at Hannan University. Specializes in the history of Japanese religious thought and Asian American religious studies. He is researching the globalization of Japanese Buddhism from a cross-border perspective that connects modern Japanese history with Asian American history. His major works include The Birth of American Buddhism: Cultural Transformation of Japanese Religion in the Early 20th Century (Gendai Shiryo Publishing, 2001); "Japanese Buddhism and Ethnicity in the United States: Focusing on the Buddhist Community in America (BCA)" Modern Buddhism 9 (2002); Buddhism at the Crossroads of the Pacific: Imamura Yemyō and Buddhist Social Ethics, in Hawaii at the Crossroads of the US and Japan before the Pacific War (ed. 1 はじめに日本から海外へいった日本人移民の子どもたち、すなわちハワイやアメリカ本土で生まれアメリカ市民権をもつ日系二世仏教徒のなかには、日本に留学して仏教を学び僧侶資格(海外での布教を行う「開教使」と呼ばれる)を得て帰国するものもあらわれてくる。 私の調査によると、早いケースでは1920年代後半から日本へ留学していたことがうかがえるが、多くは1930年代で年齢も20歳代かそれ以上であった。彼らは、高校または大学を卒業するか中退して来日し、龍谷大学か京都女子高等専門学校(現…
