Living conditions
Miserable and dirty - slept on ground in pup tent with blankets - bathe in rivers and streams - K and C ration, hot meals from mobile food truck during lull in battle. Most the we had rice with our hot meals. sic Played baseball and card games.
Most vivid memory of military experience
Men in blue stripes uniform emaciated, standing along the highway as we drove by. They were staring at us wondering who we were. Camped nearby for the day and had dinner. One of the prisoner came along and stuck his head into the container for the discarded food. To this day I still wonder what happened to him, perhaps a big stomach ache or worse. At Dachau camp, saw large and small ovens - human ashes made into large capsule piled along the wall.
Missed most whilst in the military
Freedom to come and go without a pass.
Most important thing, personally, to come from military experience?
I hope people will remember the sacrifice we endured for peace, security and tolerance.
