Living conditions
While in training at Camp Shelby, MS, we lived in wooden barracks and slept on wooden cots. We bathed in showers. Meals were rice and stew with meat. Overseas, the meals consited of can rations. Behind the line of action we had hot meals. During camp training we sometimes went to the movies, and when available, went to Shelby. Overseas went to Rome, Milan, Nice, Cannes, and Switzerland.
Most vivid memory of military experience
1). Considered marrying a French/Italian woman. 2). I was very lucky to be alive and going home after the war. A buddy was killed in the spot I was sitting after I moved.
Missed most whilst in the military
As an 18 year old kid, I was homesick and missed the usual cooked Japanese meals.
Most important thing, personally, to come from military experience?
1). The military service made me a mature man. 2). Also made me realize what family values meant by being away from home and not knowing if I would be coming home after the war. 3). By serving as a soldier in the Army, the government gave us a chance to further our education under the GI Bill.
Additional information
All the Nisei soldiers who were in the various military services, proved to the American public our loyalty to the country of our birth. We fought to gain the freedom that was taken away at the beginning of the war. It cost over 850 lives of those who sacrificed with their blood left on the soil of Europe and Asia to protect our freedom.
