Slept in wooden barracks from basic through AIT; Hard (concrete) barracks OCS through various schooling; tents & wooden barracks in RVN except when on patrols. Bathing usually hot showers, no bathing facilities on patrol. Alll hot meals, even C-rations. Best meals were L.R.R.P. Rations, worse are M.R.E. RVN Entertainment; Occasional TV, Movies, reading, following tiger, killing water buffalo, popping mosquitos.
Most vivid memory of military experience
Watching my point man go upstream on a slow-moving creek, re-assuring me that he would cross with no problems, slipping underwater; his hat floating by; reaching under his hat and pulling him out with his 80-lb. pack but no rifle.
Missed most whilst in the military
Hot sticky rice, kim chee, poi, lomi salmon, portugese sausage, manapua (char siu bao), miso shiru, miso pork, kalua pig.
Most important thing, personally, to come from military experience?
1. Getting along in a multi-cultural setting and developing team work on an ad hoc basis. 2. Learning to like potato, chipped beef on toast, biscuits and gravy, deep fried catfish, grits. 3. For both myself and my family, lessons learned most is to strive for excellence in any environment on a benign mode.
Additional information
No matter how long I live on the mainland, I believe that culinary hedonism & comraderie has an edge over status-acquiring.
