Mission Statement
It is the mission of the National Japanese American Veterans Council to provide national leadership in coordinating, aligning and representing the common interest of all Japanese American veterans organizations and their members on matter of mutual interest and benefit; to serve as a clearinghouse for information that relate to or affect Japanese American veterans organizations and members; and, to provide guidance in the future planning of Japanese American veterans organizations, consistent with the Council's affiliation with the Japanese American National Museum.
About
The National Japanese American Veterans Council's participation in the Nikkei Legacy Project is based on the belief that the history of the Japanese in the U.S. inevitably includes the incomparable military contributions that service personnel of Japanese ancestry played in winning World War II, as well as the wars that followed. Those contributions also helped significantly in overcoming racial intolerance in the United States.
The Council is dedicated to the preservation of that military history by collecting and providing information about, and access to, the various Japanese American veterans groups that hold primary membership records, and by displaying historical materials, oral histories, and essays of Japanese American veterans through the Discover Nikkei website, or through its own website.
The Japanese American military history in World War II, both in Europe and in the Pacific, including the occupation of Japan, together with service rendered in the Korean and Vietnam wars, provide a rich tableau of accomplishments and sacrifices that enriches our nation's history, and provides source materials for historians, researchers, students, families and friends.
